The juggle: motherhood and business

Are you a mum and a business owner?

Let me tell you that you are not alone if you’re finding the juggle between parenthood and business challenging. For many women, it can feel as though they’re working non stop at both but not quite succeeding at either.

In this episode, I peel back the layers to share insights from my life as I’ve juggled motherhood and business over the last decade. I talk about some of the things that have been helpful for me to navigate this journey, move past guilt and do what’s best for my family, my business and myself.

Remember, this is your business and this is your family. Only you get to set the benchmarks for success when it comes to balancing everything that’s important to you.

Topics We Covered:

[1:30]: This is a deeply personal topic. Only you get to set the benchmarks for success when it comes to balancing parenthood and business.

[2:20]: Motherhood has become synonymous with feelings of guilt and failure.

[3:15]: My journey starting my first business and finding out I was pregnant with my first child. We made a conscious decision to continue with the business while raising a family.

[4:30]: The challenges during pregnancy and how I kept working around the clock when I was a new mum.

[6:00]: I felt really underneath my business and it was a constant struggle but it completely shaped the way I wanted to run this business. We decided to sell the business which made me feel like I was either failing at business or at motherhood.

[8:10]: #1: I get to define my own version of success when it comes to business and parenting. Align yourself to your own value system and end goal.

[8:50]: It’s really important that my husband and I are on the same page and make big decisions with the context of how it fits in with our family life.

[10:30]: #2: I structure my business to fit in with our family. I try to limit my business hours to school hours, which means I don’t do big launches.

[11:00]: #3: I’ve been intentional about letting go of guilt. I make sacrifices both in business and family life. I can’t get to everything.

[12:20]: #4: Prioritising myself. I get way off balance when I don’t have any space for me.

[13:45]: #5: Discipline and structure. Systems and processes are really important and I map out my calendar that maximises the time I’m in my business.

[15:15]: #6: Getting support for the family and in business. Acknowledge what your capacity is and invest in the help you need.

[17:05]: #7: Honouring my boundaries. This includes boundaries with clients and myself.

[18:30]: #8: I work to my mind and body. I work well in the morning and take my foot off the pedal outside of school hours.
